Absolute Truth? Absolutely!

Last week at church we were having a discussion about a book called “The Shack,” when two very interesting questions came up. The Pastor asked the group:

1. Is there a True God?
2. Is there an Absolute Truth?

Well for just a moment silence fell over the crowd but that only lasted for a moment. Many people had an answer to share for these two interesting questions. I had raised my hand to respond too but there was just not enough time left in the discussion to get to me so I will try to take a moment to address them here in this blog.

First of all, is there a True God? Well I hope most Christians would answer this with a resounding YES. This is the basis of our faith that there is only one True God. We experience God in three ways (The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit) but there is only one True God. There are many in this world who don’t share our view of this but we find the answer for them in Philippians Chapter 2 verse 9-11, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Some may not proclaim that now but in the end all will proclaim the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Then comes the more controversial question, is there an Absolute Truth? I would answer this question, absolutely. We live in a world where humanism is more and more prevalent in our society. We hear people consistently say that truth is a matter of context or even personal preferences. Our world today would want us to allow each person to define what they think truth is and to live their life by that truth. However, the fact is that there is an absolute truth and the source of that truth is the True God. God alone displays absolute truth for us.

One of best tests for absolute truth is whether it remains constant or changes over time. If something changes over time, it definately is not truth, let alone absolute truth. We build our entire hopes for salvation on the absolute truth in John 3:16, that God so loved the world that he sent his one and only Son that whoever belives in Him shall have eternal life. We believe this is the key to our salvation and if this is not Absolute Truth, we have no hope of salvation. If God would change this truth in the future, we would all be subject to eternal damnation. But we know this is not the case as God never changes. As we find in Hebrews Chapter 13 verse 8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Now that is Absolute Truth, praise God!
